The Seminar Where Nobody Read the Paper

seminar week. nobody read beyond the abstract. we performed disagreement for ninety minutes based on titles. i said "i think the author is arguing X" and the author was sitting right there and said "i am not." humiliating and clarifying. academia rewards fluency over preparation. i'm trying to be the person who actually reads. it makes me slower and better. office hours bleed into seminar prep bleed into email apologies for being slow. my advisor's calendar is a fortress. mine is a suggestion. i ate dinner over the keyboard and dropped sauce on a printout that cost twelve cents per page and felt like twelve dollars emotionally. tomorrow i will pretend the week is under control. the department lounge had free cookies and competitive silence. two people discussed a fellowship i am not applying for because deadlines are also a personality test. i highlighted a paragraph until the page tore slightly. small violence. the argument i am building needs one more source and six more hours i do not have.

Grad school is not only learning your field. It is learning which performances you refuse to join.

The institution rewards certainty. The work requires doubt. I live in that gap with tea, deadlines, and the stubborn belief that one clear paragraph can still move a reader.
