The Reef Monitoring Buoy Stopped Pinging

Our monitoring buoy went offline Tuesday. Maybe storm. Maybe battery. Maybe someone stole the solar panel again.

Without it we are blind to bleaching onset on the north sector, and grant reporting still wants continuous data. Continuous is a fantasy. Field science is duct tape, weather, theft, and the prayer that the equipment survives long enough to justify the budget line.

The reef does not pause because our instruments fail. Bleaching does not wait for IT. We dive anyway, notebooks and color charts and the old human methods that satellites were supposed to replace but never fully did.

I love this work. I also want funders to understand that the data is always partial and the partial data still matters.
